About YorkShire Terriers
Nickname: Yorkies
DESCRIPTION
The Yorkshire Terrier is one of the most well known of the toy breeds. They have silky soft black and tan colored fur, often with dramatic wisps of light grey & white. The long hair around their little faces almost always needs to be fastened up with a hair tie to keep it clean and out of the Yorkies field of vision. Regular trimming will solve this problem as well. Their eyes are known for their sparkling, intelligent expression and are placed to look directly ahead; an advantage for hunting breeds. Yorkies usually weigh less than 7 pounds and can fit into a large coat pocket or small bag with ease. They are very energetic, brave, loyal dogs that seem oblivious of their small size: this makes them great candidates to be watch dogs.
PERSONALITY
The Yorkie is a great dog to have in a family with children that are not too young. They are not recommended for homes that have very young children because Yorkies can be injured if stepped on, jumped on or dropped. Young children can also be a problem for Yorkies because they lack the pack leader skill required to prevent the dog from developing behavior problems. Gentle but firm leadership skills must be practiced by all members of the family and then The Yorkie will be a very sweet happy little dog.
HEALTH
Some of the health problems that are occasionally seen in the Yorkshire Terrier breed are: bronchitis, dental problems, digestive sensitivity, spinal/nerve damage, fractures of fragile bones, anesthetic intolerance and abnormal skull formations. In healthy well cared for Yorkies, these problems are very rare.
Dental care is very important and a vet should check & clean their teeth to prevent tooth loss & infection. Feeding dry food will help the teeth as well. Your Yorkie will do well in an apartment setting and will be very active indoors, so they do not have to have a yard. They prefer warm climates and are rather sensitive to cold. Life Expectancy is 12-15 years.
EXERCISE
Daily walk is mandatory to satisfy their need to walk, especially with their pack leader. Game play is great for fun and exercise too, but part of the daily regime must be the walk.
GROOMING
Yorkies need to be groomed regularly, with the show dog requiring hours of grooming. A clipped coat needs combing and brushing almost daily and the hair on the top of the head is usually tied with a ribbon or clipped short. Shedding is not an issue with this breed. Teeth must be cleaned daily.
